Fly in the face of your prophets, I mock your morality plays
Second counselling session tonight at 'The Substance Misuse Counselling & Advice Centre', still feel i'm getting nowhere. Anne, the lady I see wants me to ask my GP to put me through detox. I've tried the 'no alcohol' thing and know the damage it can do... yes there is the medication they give you but is the cure worse than the curse??
'Alcohol detox can be defined as a period of medically monitored treatment, were a person is helped to overcome their physical dependence on alcohol. The objective of alcohol detox is to help the patient achieve an alcohol free state. Detox is intended to relieve the physical symptoms of withdrawal. Detox helps prepare the patient for entry into treatment and rehab. Therefore, the ultimate goal of detox is preparation for long term recovery from alcoholism. Alcohol detox is most commonly completed in an inpatient, medical setting. Alcohol detox can cause a variety of major and/or minor physical, sometimes psychological, manifestations. The process of alcohol detox can be traumatic. Alcohol detox has the potential for triggering any number of side effects. These can range from mild to quite severe. Mild reactions to alcohol detox can include tremors (the shakes), headaches, vomiting, perspiration, restlessness, lose of appetite and insomnia. More serious effects of alcohol detox can be Delirium Tremors (DT’s), autonomic hyperactivity and seizures (convulsions). It has been estimated that 1 in 4 patients are at high risk of a withdrawal seizure if not medically treated during alcohol detox. The time necessary for alcohol detox can be anywhere from 3 to 14 days. A variety of medications and procedures are used to detox from alcohol in a medical environment. Buprenophex, certain benzodiazepines and anticonvulsant medication are some of the medications used.'
Lovely, no??!!
Finally had some good news this week. Insurance company has settled on my laptop and I have a big ol' cheque sat in my bank waiting to clear, means I can buy a new laptop this week hopefully... also, Car claim has cleared and the bus companies insurer has offered me the full value of my car to write it off - as a Cat D write off which means I keep car as it is 'A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.' so I can sell it on, I just have to make the buyer aware what has happened!
New car coming soon? 2.0 99 Vectra SRI? Fast as fookery?? Oh yes!

I almost bought a Vectra about 6 years ago in Australia. I never ended up buying anything but a used Vectra was at the top of my shortlist.
No doubt detox will suck. I had a week of hell recently when I quit paxil and that was probably nothing compared to alcohol detox. If you decide to do it, do a lot of research first and find out what things people have found helped them get through it. (For me with the Paxil, it was exercise)
You have to figure that even if it sucks, it's worth it if it works.
i think the first and foremost thing an alcoholic needs isto talk regularly with other alcoholics. isolation is very bad for an alcoholic. secrets, too. bad bad.
my grandma went thru detox in a hosp. a long time ago and she had DTs.
she thought she saw spiders, but there were none and she thought she saw a big black man staring in her window and sitting in her room, but nobody else saw that. she still remembers it like it was yesterday and she is 73, now.
BUT... alcoholism is a disease which slowly kills you. it's like committing prolonged suicide, however it's progressive so the prolongment gets less prolonged as time goes on.
you prolly already know this, buti am butting in with my two cents anyhow!!
best of luck to you.
IT SOUNDS SCARY TO ME
up the irons!
Orsomething.
